Bowflex has done away with conventional weight systems with their SelectTech weights. I bought a pair of these way back in 2005, and I'm still enjoying them to this day. The beauty of the ST weights lies in their design. When slotted into their respective holding brackets, you can "dial" the desired weight using a turning knob on either side of the weight. When you lift the weight from its bracket, only the necessary plates required for your set weight will lift along with them, leaving the other weights in the bracket. It's an ingenious and all-too-obvious system that serves to create the ultimate in convenience. It also saves a ton of space that would be taken up with a row full of individual weights. Factor in the time saved by not having to manually add weights onto a dumbbell, and it becomes clear that Bowflex is on the right track here. You can even dial up different weight settings on either side of a dumbbell for the purpose of making it more challenging for specific workouts.
The price of the 552s has dropped significantly over the years, and I'm amazed to see it for its current $359 price on Amazon. There's no excuse to pass these up. With a max weight of 52.5 lbs, even seasoned workout pros can benefit from this kind of weight. Beginners will love the fact that they can start at the lightest weight, and move on up without the hassle of having to hit a gym day after day, or make gargantuan room for workout equipment. I'm suddenly reminded of my bachelor pad days when I appreciated just how convenient and space-saving these things really are. As with all dumbbells, care should be given not to drop them. The internal mechanism of these things is highly complex, and I wonder just how much extreme damage they can take before something breaks. Nevertheless, it's the best option for anyone looking for a reliable set of dumbbells they can keep in shape with.
